Internal Blinds in Glass For Windows & Doors In The UK

What are internal blinds?

Internal Blinds are referred to using many other phrases, these include integral blinds, integrated blinds, interstitial blinds, built in blinds, between glass blinds, blinds in glass, and more! All of these phrases refer to the same product, which is most commonly known as integral blinds in the UK. The terms used to describe this product often confuse people, as they are unsure whether the product is sold as just the actual blind/s, without any glass or a sealed unit, or whether it is the entire sealed glass unit with the blinds sealed in-between. Internal Blinds refers to a finished sealed glass unit for windows and/or doors, but with a venetian or pleated blind sealed in-between the two panes of glass, internal blinds are supplied by us as the finished sealed glass unit, whereby the blind has been sealed in-between the glass during the manufacturing process in our factory.

What are Internal Blinds?

To understand what exactly an internal blind refers to, we have to understand what a sealed unit is. A sealed unit is the glass or glazing element that is installed into windows/doors. A sealed unit is made up of an inner pane/sheet of glass, which is cut to size, this inner pane of glass is most commonly 4mm toughened in the UK, we then have a space/gap in-between the inner and outer pane of glass, this space/gap is achieved using a spacer bar which runs around all 4 sides of the sealed unit, connecting at all corners creating a frame. One of the main functions of the spacer bar is to achieve and maintain the gap/space in-between the two panes of glass, the spacer bar sits around the outside perimeter of all four sides of the glass, therefore it is out of view when the sealed unit is installed. The space or cavity for sealed units is most commonly 20mm in the UK, which is achieved using a 20mm spacer bar. An internal blind is exactly what has just been discussed above, it is a sealed unit, but the difference is it has a venetian or pleated blind sealed into the cavity of the sealed unit, it is then operated in a manual magnetic system, or a motorised electric system.

Magnetic Internal Blind

Magnetic Internal Blinds are our most popular system amongst homeowners, they are the most cost effective option, and they are also very easy and quick to operate. Magnetic internal blinds are operated by hand, using two small, discreet control blocks that sit on the perimeter of the face of the inner pane of glass, as can be seen in the image accompanying this text. Both controls are usually on the same side, with the smaller tilt control above, and the raise and lower control underneath, however, with sealed units under 600mm in height, each control has to be placed on opposite sides of the internal face of the glass. The tilt control has a much smaller control zone, which is a few inches above and below the control block, simply gently pushing the control either up or down will tilt and rotate the slats to any angle you desire. The raise and lower magnet control is slightly larger as it houses more magnets, and you can raise and lower the blind inside the glass by sliding the magnetic control up and down the face of the perimeter of the glass, this can be done effortlessly and in seconds with our rapid raise and lower internal sun blinds.

Benefits of Internal Blinds

Benefits of Internal Blinds

Benefits of Integral Blinds

Internal Blinds are sealed units which have a venetian or pleated blind sealed inside of the glass unit. A sealed unit is simply the glass or glazing element that is installed into windows/doors. The blind is inserted and exists in the space in-between the two panes of glass, sealed units today are primarily double glazed with two panes of glass, with a space or cavity in-between the inner and outer panes of glass. The venetian or pleated blind exists inside the cavity of the sealed unit, the sealed unit is then hermetically sealed, which is both a watertight and an airtight seal. They are often referred to a mini blinds, as the venetian option has slats that are 12.5mm, which are considered mini blinds considering you can get venetian blinds that are much larger in conventional venetian blinds. It is not possible to have internal blinds larger than 12.5mm slats, as we are limited to a 20mm space in-between the two panes of glass, therefore any larger and the blind would not be able to operate without coming into contact with the glass.

Internal Blinds last far longer than conventional blinds, this is because the blinds cannot become damaged as they exist inside the sealed unit, and are protected on both sides by toughened glass, so unless the glass is broken, then the blind cannot be touched or damaged by humans, pets, or objects. As a result of the blinds not being able to become damaged by contact, they last far longer, and they can last as long as the lifetime of the sealed units, which last around 20 years. We personally test our internal blinds to 10,000 repetitions, which means each week we take two samples and have a machine that both tilts the blind open and closed 10,000 times, and also raises and lowers the blind 10,000 times, this ensures we are supply a high quality product that can operate up to 10,000 times without fail. If you are operating your blinds once a day, then 10,000 repetitions is equivalent to more than 27 years of use, proving the quality, durability and longevity of our product. This is why we supply a massive warranty of 10-years! So if anything were to go wrong with your blinds, or the sealed unit within 10 years of having them installed, we will repair or replace them free of charge.

It is also important to consider the fact that not only do our internal blinds last far longer, but they also last far longer while staying in perfect condition. Conventional blinds come into contact with humans, pets, and objects regularly and quickly show signs of damage and wear & tear, with scratches, broken, and twisted slats and mechanisms, so although conventional blinds may last a few years, they do so in visibly damaged condition. Our internal blinds are sealed using an airtight and watertight seal, and protected on both sides using toughened glass, we also ensure before we seal them between the glass they are free from any dust or dirt, therefore the the entire lifetime of the internal blinds, they remain in perfect condition, so even after several years they will still look brand new as they did on day 1!

Our magnetic internal blinds in glass are available in a wide range of different colours for both the slats and the perimeter frame, to simplify things, all of our colours are available for both the slats and the perimeter frame of the blind. Our available colours are white, black, anthracite grey, cream, and silver, we also have two dual colours available, one is white inside and anthracite grey outside, and one is white inside and black outside. You can choose to have the same colour for both the slats and the perimeter frame of the blind, for example white slats and a white perimeter frame, or you can choose to have a contrast in colour, for example an anthracite grey blind and a white perimeter frame, it is entirely your choice. Our magnetic controls as standard come colour matched to the colour you choose for your perimeter frame, for example if you choose to have a black perimeter frame, your controls will come as black as standard. You can choose to have your controls in any of our standard colours if you wish, in a contrast to the colour of the perimeter frame, for example you could choose a silver perimeter frame, and then choose anthracite grey controls, but this is something you have to specify, as as standard, they’ll come the same colour as the colour you choose for your perimeter frame.

We only supply the finished and sealed glass unit with the internal blind already sealed inside the glass, we do not supply the blinds separately without the glass, this would only be suitable for sealed unit manufacturers such as ourselves. It is also not possible for us to fit our internal blinds into your existing sealed glass units. We often are approached by homeowners that have sealed units in their windows/doors that are new or recently installed, and for that reason ask us if we can fit our internal blinds into their existing sealed units, and the answer is that we cannot do it. This would involve us having to visit your property to remove and take away your existing sealed units, leaving you without any glass in your windows/doors, then go through a difficult and time consuming process of splitting the seal on every unit and carefully removing and scraping the sealant away without damaging either pane of glass, and then resealing the unit with a blind inside, it is actually a process that would cost you more to do than simply us providing new sealed units with internal blinds.

We can retrofit our internal mini blinds into your existing windows and doors, even if you have had your windows/doors installed for decades, it is still highly likely we can retrofit our internal sun blinds into your existing frames. To put it simply, we can retrofit our internal blinds into any frame that can accommodate sealed units that are 24mm or above, which basically means that the sealed units in your existing frame must be 24mm thick or above, but do not worry, this is something we can confirm on a free survey. Our internal blind can be installed into all types of windows/doors including UPVC, Aluminium, and Timber. We offer a nationwide retrofitting service, as well as free nationwide surveys, it is a simple process whereby our expert fitters will carefully remove your existing sealed glass units, and replace them with new high performance sealed units with internal blinds.

Internal Blinds Windows can be installed into any frame, window or door, that can accommodate sealed glass units that are 24mm thick or above, this is because the minimum thickness we can manufacture our internal blinds in is 24mm, although as standard they are 28mm, as are all sealed units in the UK as standard. The good news is that the overwhelming majority of new frames today, as well as old frames still installed, have 24mm or 28mm sealed units. Our internal blockout blinds can be used in all kinds of windows including casement windows, bifold windows, tilt & turn windows, bay windows, sash windows, and bow windows, as well as all kinds of doors including bifolding doors, sliding patio doors, french doors, and single glazed doors, all of these windows and door types are suitable for an internal blind as they can accommodate sealed units that are 24mm or above, and can operate without the magnetic controls getting in the way of the operation of the windows/doors.

The internal blind never needs cleaning, that is perhaps one of the most revered benefits of having bs en 13120 internal blinds, you never have to worry about your blinds getting dirty or dusty again! The blind is sealed inside the sealed glass unit using a hermetic seal, which is both an airtight and watertight seal, before we seal the blind in-between the two panes of glass in our factory, we ensure the blind is clean and free from any dirt or dusty, therefore once the blind is sealed inside the glass unit, it remains clean and free from any dirty or dust for the lifetime of the sealed unit, and therefore you never have to clean the blind, just the glass.

You do not have to change or replace your existing window/door frames in order to have our internal mini blinds, we can retrofit our internal glass blinds into your existing window/door frames, but we do have to remove and replace your existing glass units, and replace them with our new high performance sealed units with internal blinds. It is not possible to reuse your existing sealed glass units, however, we can dispose of your old sealed glass units free of charge.

Our internal blinds in glass can be used in sliding patio doors, and in fact are perhaps the most effective solution when it comes to dressing your sliding patio doors with venetian blinds. Our internal blockout blinds work so well with sliding patio doors, our small and slimline magnetic control blocks allow you to slide one door sash over the other without knocking into the controls, one sash will slide over another without affecting the controls. Even with the smallest sliding patio doors, say 1.8m, with an opening like that it is not possible to have venetian blinds, the blind would be too large, an alternative would be several individual blinds which are difficult to operate, that flap around in the wind, and that quickly get damaged and broken. Our internal blinds inside french doors exist inside your sealed glass units, therefore they do not get dirty or damaged, and do not flap around in the wind.

Our internal blind windows are available in two different systems of operation, a manual magnetic system, and a motorised electric system.

Our magnetic internal sun blinds are operated manually by hand, each glass unit has two of its own small, discreet magnetic control blocks that sit on the face of the inside pane of glass, that faces inside your home, the two magnetic control blocks can either be on the left or right hand side of the glass unit. The magnetic controls are essentially plastic casings that have magnets inside of them, the magnets inside of the control blocks, connect through the inner pane of glass to magnets that are inside of the sealed units, although the magnets inside of the sealed units are out of view, and concealed inside the perimeter frame of the blind. To operate the blind, you have both the smaller tilt control, and the larger raise and lower control, to rotate the angle of the slats for your internal mini blinds, you simply push the tilt control a few inches up or down, and in turn you can rotate the slats open and closed. To raise and lower the internal glass blinds, you use the larger raise and lower control block, this has a larger control zone, which is roughly 50% of the height of the unit, so you slide the control block up towards the top of the glass unit to lower the blind to the bottom, and you slide the control block towards the bottom of the glass to raise the blind fully to the top. As discussed earlier, both the tilt and raise and lower control are on the same side of the glass as standard, although, we are able to put 1 control on each side on request, for example we could put the tilt control on the left hand side, and the raise and lower control on the right hand side, or the other way around. Most clients  prefer to have both controls on the same side, which is why that is what we offer as standard.

Our motorised internal blinds in glass are operated using a battery module that sits on the face of the glass for each unit, and they can also optionally be operated using a remote control. Our motorised internal blinds are powered electrically, the motor that operates the blind is concealed inside the headrail at the top of the sealed unit, so it is out of view, a cable from the motor exits the sealed unit out of the side of the glass and connects to a small transmission pad that will be stuck to the face of the perimeter of the glass, we usually put it in the top left or right hand side of the unit, the battery module then snaps onto the transmission pad, and the transmission pad becomes out of view once the battery module has been connected, the transmission pad and the back of the battery module both have magnets, which allows the battery module to securely connect to the transmission pad. The battery module then provides power to the transmission pad, which takes that power to the motor which is hidden inside the headrail of the sealed unit. The system is therefore powered by the rechargeable battery module, this module lasts several months depending on how much you use the blind, then when it runs out you simply use the micro USB cable we provide to fully chare the battery module again in a matter of hours, then simply reconnect it to the transmission pad. The battery module also has two buttons on it, an up and down button, tapping either the up or down button will rotate and tilt the slats, then holding either the up or down button for a few seconds then letting go will start to raise or lower the blind up and down depending which button you push, you can let go of the button after a few seconds and the blind will continue to raise or lower until it is either fully raised to the top or lowered to the bottom. The blinds can also be operated via an optional remote control, again there is an up and down button on the remote control, the buttons work in the same way as the battery module. The great thing about the remote control is that you can operate several blinds at the same time, you have several channels on the remote control, and for example if you have 5 blinds in the same room, or in a bifold for example, we can programme all of them onto channel 1, so you can operate them all at the same time, then you can use the other channels to operate each blind individually, if you desire.

We offer a nationwide survey and installation service for our internal blind system, as well as with all of the products we offer including windows and doors. We cover all of the UK, if you choose us to carry out your installation, then we will also provide a free survey whereby we will ascertain accurate glass sizes for manufacturing, as well as show you a sample internal blinds unit, and a colour swatch.

Yes we do, whether you are using us for supply only or supply and install, we offer a nationwide measuring up service, if you choose us to carry out your installation, then our measuring up service will be free of charge. Our measuring up service includes one of our expert surveyors come to measure and ascertain your accurate glazing sizes, as well as show you a sample of the internal blind unit, and answer any questions that you may have.

Our magnetic internal blind system comes with a massive 10-year warranty, and our motorised internal blinds come with a 5-year guarantee. Our magnetic internal blinds in glass come with a full 10-year warranty, when we say a full warranty, we mean that the guarantee covers firstly the integrity of the sealed unit, protecting you against fog, condensation, and the unit seal failing, and it also covers the blind and the blind mechanism itself, so you have the peace of mind knowing you have a full 10-year warranty. Our motorised internal sun blinds also come with a full warranty, and you have the peace of mind knowing you are fully covered for 5 years.

This is not a possibility, it would involve visiting your property and removing your existing sealed glass units, leaving you without any glass in your windows and doors, then taking your sealed units back to our factory, splitting the seal and separating the panes of glass, then carefully removing the sealant and cleaning each pane of glass, which is a very difficult and time consuming task, and then finally inserting the blind and resealing the glass units, the whole process would take about 1 week or more, it would cost us more to do it this way, than it would for us to supply new sealed glass units with internal blinds. We supply you new sealed glass units with internal blinds, whereby the blind has been sealed in-between the two panes of glass during the manufacturing stage in our factory.

While it is extremely rare for anything to go wrong with our internal blinds, if something does go wrong you have the peace of mind to know that we offer a full 10-year warranty, so if anything does go wrong, you will come and either repair or replace the internal blind sealed unit, which absolutely zero cost to you. Most issues that arise with blinds usually are as a result of the fact contemporary blinds can be tampered with, with our internal blinds because they cannot be physically touched, they are far less prone to developing issues and faults.

Our internal blind sealed units are high performing sealed units, for many reasons. Firstly the cavity inside our sealed units are filled with argon, sealed units filled with argon gas rather than air, help retain heat inside your home, this allows you to turn the radiators down or even off, which reduces your energy consumption and also reduces your bills. One of the main aims of an energy-efficient window it to stop heat transfer through the glass units, which contributes to a better-insulated building envelope. This is where Argon gas is effective.

All of our internal blinds are also manufactured using warm edge spacer bars. Up to 80% of energy loss through a window occurs at its edge. Warm edge products aim to minimise this energy loss. Our internal blind sealed units fitted with warm edge spacers have a warmer internal edge temperature by up to 65% which helps to improve the thermal efficiency of the window and reduce the risk of condensation.

All of our internal blind sealed units are manufactured using low-emissivity glass for the inner pane of the double glazed unit. Low-emissivity glass, or low-e glass, is a kind of energy-efficient glass designed to prevent heat escaping out through your glazing to the cold outdoors. For our low-emissivity glass we use Planitherm Total +, which is one of the most widely used and best performing energy efficiency window glass products available today. Double glazed units incorporating Planitherm Total + offer up to three times more insulation than standard double glazing, and significantly better thermal insulation compared to hard coated low-E products. This will deliver considerable savings on heating bills and eliminate cold areas around windows.

As you can see, we ensure we use the correct materials to manufacture high performing sealed units that are energy efficient.

Only our magnetic internal blinds have a perimeter frame down the left or right hand side of the glass, as well as having a headrail at the top, our motorised internal blinds do not have any perimeter frame, only a headrail. Our magnetic internal glass blinds are symmetrical in appearance as standard, this means that the perimeter frame inside the glass is on both the left and right hand side, giving a symmetrical finish, we point this out as competitor systems often only have the perimeter frame down one side, which leaves an unsymmetrical finish. We manufacture all of our internal blinds symmetrical as standard, although we are able to do the perimeter frame just down one side, the perimeter frame is 35mm wide on each side, so you do lose 35mm of glass on both sides. Over the course of several years, we have presented homeowners with the option to either have the perimeter frame on one side, or both sides giving a symmetrical finish, the overwhelming majority of the time, homeowners chose to have the perimeter frame on both sides, which is why we manufacture all of our magnetic integral blinds symmetrical as standard.

Yes they are, all of our internal blind sealed units are argon filled as standard, we do not manufacture internal blinds without argon gas, as they would not function properly. Argon gas is a far better insulator than air, and will increase the thermal performance of your sealed units, helping prevent the cold from entering into your home.
