Built in Blinds For Windows & Doors In The UK

What are Built in Blinds?

Built in Blinds are also commonly referred to as integral blinds, integrated blinds, internal blinds, blinds in glass, enclosed blinds and more. Built in Blinds are sealed units, which is the glass or glazing element that is installed into windows and/or doors, but they have a blind built into the cavity of the sealed unit. Built in Blinds are primarily double glazed units, therefore the blind is inserted and sealed in-between the two panes of glass. The built in blind is available from us in two options – either a manual magnetic system, or in an electric motorised system. Built in Blinds are suitable for any window and/or door frame that can accommodate a sealed unit, whether it is double or triple glazed.

What are Built in Blinds

As explained above, built in blinds are simply sealed units (double glazed or triple glazed units) that have a blind sealed in-between the two panes of glass. A sealed unit is simply the glass or glazing element that sits inside a window/door frame. If we think about a sealed unit, firstly we have the inner pane of glass, which in the UK is most commonly 4mm toughened glass, we then have a cavity, or space, which is most commonly 20mm in the UK, then finally we have the outer pane of glass, which again in the UK is most commonly a 4mm toughened pane of glass. The cavity, or space in-between the inner and outer pane of glass, is achieved and maintained using a spacer bar which runs around the edge of all four corners of the sealed unit. A built in blinds is exactly what has just been described, it is a sealed unit, the only difference is it has a blind that exists and is sealed in-between the two panes of glass.

Magnetic Built in Blind

Magnetic built in blinds are our most popular system that we offer. Magnetic built in blinds are operated by hand using two small control blocks that sit on the face of the inner pane of glass, there is a control for the tilt function of the blind, and there is a control for the raise and lower function of the blind, by hand simply sliding the controls up and down the face of the glass will in turn tilt the blind open and closed, as well as raise the blind up and down. As standard, both controls will be on the same side of the glass, either on the left or right hand side of the glass unit, however, if the sealed unit is small than 600mm in height, the two controls will have to be on opposite sides, and there is no enough height in the unit for both controls to be on the same side.

Benefits of Built in Blinds

Built in Blinds are sealed units (which is the glass or glazing element that is installed into windows/doors), but with a blind sealed in-between the two panes of glass. The blind is sealed into the cavity of the sealed unit, which is the space in-between the inner and outer pane of the double glazed unit. The blind is available in two systems – a manual magnetic system, and an electric motorised system. The manual magnetic system consists of a blind, and a perimeter frame, or profile that is around 35mm on the left and right hand side of the unit, as well as a headrail at the top. Our electric motorised integral blinds consists of a blind, and a headrail at the top, our motorised blinds do not have a perimeter frame on the left or right of the glass unit.

Our built in blinds are built to last, using the highest quality aluminium components, and the latest magnetic technology – our built in blinds last far longer than conventional blinds that sit on your frames or in front of your window/door frames. This is because most conventional blinds break down because the blinds and mechanism is exposed to human contact, and contact by objects and pets. Our built in blinds cannot touched, or damaged by objects, they are protected on both sides by toughened glass, and therefore last far longer, often they last for the lifetime of the sealed unit. Our built in blinds come with a full 10-year warranty, this covers the sealed unit – protecting you against fog, condensation, and the unit breaking down, and also the 10-year warranty covers you against the blind mechanism. So when you purchase your built in blinds from us, you can have the peace of mind of knowing that in the extremely rare scenario that something does go wrong, your built in blinds are fully protected by a 10-year warranty. Our built in blinds are also tested to 10,000 repetitions, which means every week we take 2 sample blinds and have a machine that tilts the blind open and closed 10,000 times, and raises the blind up and down 10,000 times, if you raise your blind up and down once a day, this is equivalent to 27 years of use! This proves that we are not only committed to quality, but also that we ensure we manufacture a high quality product that is built to last and perform excellently.

It is not just about how long the blinds last, for example, with conventional blinds, as they are exposed to humans, objects, pets, and children, they get damaged quickly – the slats become scratched, twisted, bent and broken. So although they are not broken, they are damaged and do not look great and perform as they should. Our built in blinds not only last far longer than conventional blinds, but they stay in perfect condition, the blinds are protected on both sides by toughened glass and sealed in an airtight and watertight seal around all sides of the glass unit, therefore, nothing gets in or out, and your blinds look brand new even after several years, just as they did on the day they were installed.

Our built in blinds are available in a variety of popular colours. Our magnetic built in blinds are available in Anthracite Grey, Black, White, Cream and Silver, we also have two dual colours available, one being White inside and Black outside, and one being White inside and Anthracite Grey outside. These colours are all available for both the slats, and for the perimeter frame, you can choose to have the same colour for both the slats and perimeter frame, or you can choose to have a contrast, say for example anthracite grey slats, and a white perimeter frame.

Our built in blinds are supplied as finished sealed units, with the blind having been sealed in-between the glass during the manufacturing stage in our factory. We do not, and it is not possible for us to provide just the blind, we supply the finished double or triple glazed unit with the blind already inserted and sealed inside the unit, ready to be installed into your windows and/or doors.

Absolutely. Our built in blinds can be retrofitted into your existing window and/or door frames. We offer a nationwide retrofitting service whereby we can retrofit our built in blinds into your existing window and/or door frames. It is a simple process of us carefully removing the glass units from your existing frames, and replacing them with new sealed units with built in blinds. It is possible to retrofit our built in blinds into all types of windows/doors, including UPVC, Timber and Aluminium.

Our built in mini blinds can be used in all types of windows and doors, including UPVC, Timber, and Aluminium. Our built in shades are also suitable to be installed into all kinds of windows including casement windows, bay windows, bow windows, tilt & turn windows, as well as all kinds of doors including sliding doors, french doors, bifold doors, and single doors. The only limitation is that the minimum thickness of a sealed unit that we can manufacture using our built in blinds is 24mm, that means that your window/door frame must be able to accommodate a sealed unit that is 24mm or above.

You don’t! That is perhaps one of the most attractive benefits our having our in built blinds, you never have to clean the blinds, because they never get dirty or dusty! The blind is sealed in-between the two panes of glass during the manufacturing stage in our workshop, before we seal the blinds inside the glass unit, we ensure they are immaculate and free of any dust or dirt, we then seal the blind in-between the glass using a hermetic seal. A hermetic seal is both an airtight and watertight seal, meaning that nothing gets in or out after the seal has been applied, therefore as we ensure the blind is immaculate when it is sealed in-between the glass, it remains in immaculate condition for the entire lifetime of the sealed unit – and you never have to worry about cleaning your blinds!

You do not have to have new windows and/or doors to have inbuilt blinds, it is possible in most cases for us to simply retrofit our inbuilt blinds into your existing windows/doors. This means that you can keep your existing window/door frames, and we simply remove your existing sealed glass units, and replace them with new sealed glass units with blinds built in. As long as the existing sealed glass units in your current frames are 24mm thick or above, then we can retrofit our integral blinds, but this is also something we can confirm during a free survey.

Our built in blinds are perhaps the best way to dress your sliding patio doors, and our built in blinds are suitable to be installed into sliding patio door frames. If we consider conventional blinds, in particular perfect fit blinds that are installed onto window/door frames, they are unsuitable for sliding patio doors, as one door sash slides over another, a perfect fit blind would not be suitable as it would not allow the sliding sash to slide over the fixed sash. Other alternatives are a conventional blind that is installed onto the wall in front of your doors, however due to the width of the opening of sliding doors, you would not be able to have a venetian blind, the only option would be to have several blinds, which looks very unsightly and will also result in you having gaps in-between each blind. Not to mention all of the issues with conventional blinds; they get dirty and dusty and are a nightmare to clean, they can scratched and twisted and broken, they slap around in the wind when you have your doors open, and therefore come with many issues.

This is why our built in blinds are the best way to dress your sliding patio doors, each individual glass panel has its own blind built in which takes up no additional space, it exists inside the glass unit that would already be there, our slimline controls that sit on the face of the glass allow the sliding sash to slide over the fixed sash without issues of the controls obstructing the sliding sash.

There are two different systems available from us, the manual magnetic system, and the electric motorised system.

Our manual magnetic system is operated using two small discreet controls that sit on the face of the perimeter of the glass. The controls have magnets inside of them, and those magnets in turn connect to magnets inside of the unit that are attached to the strings of the blinds, those strings are out of view and concealed inside the perimeter frame, but the magnets attached to the strings connect with the magnets in the controls on the face of the glass. You simply, by hand, have to slide the larger control up and down the face of the glass in order to raise and lower the blind, this is very easy to do, and you can take your blind up and down in seconds. The smaller control again simply has to be pushed a few inches up or down in order to rotate and tilt the slats to any angle.

Our motorised built in blinds are powered via a battery module that we supply for all of our motorised units, the battery module again sits on the face of the glass of each unit, it usually is placed in the top right or left hand side of the unit, the battery module sits on an contact that takes the power from the battery module to the motor inside the unit, which is concealed inside the headrail of the blind. The battery module is not just the power source, you can also operate the blind using the battery module, there are two buttons on the module, one arrow pointing up, and one arrow pointing down. Pressing the up or down button will tilt the blinds slats, holding the up or down button for a few seconds will take the blinds up or down, depending which button you press. The battery module lasts several months, and when it runs out of charge, simply plug it in and charge it using a micro-USB, and it will fully charge within a few hours. There is also the option to have a remote control, which works in the same way as the battery module, in terms of the fact is has one up arrow and one down arrow button. One of the great features of the remote control, is that we can programme several blinds onto the same channel, so that you can operate several blinds at the same time at the click of a button using the remote.

Yes we do, we supply and install nationwide. What we initially ask for is rough glass sizes, for example the visible glass size of each glass panel you wish to replace with built in blinds, once we have these measurements we can provide an accurate quotation, then if you are interested in the quote, we can then organise to measure up accurately during a survey, which is free of charge.

We carry out nationwide surveys free of charge, when we carry out surveys it is our responsibility to ensure the measurements are correct and we are liable for any errors. Our friendly surveyors are also able to bring a sample of our blind unit, as well as colour swatches to show you.

Our built in shades for windows and doors come with the longest warranty in the industry, which is a massive 10 years! This is what we call a full warranty, what we mean by that, is that both the sealed unit is guaranteed – covering you against fog, condensation, and the unit breaking down, and it also covers the blind and the blind mechanism itself, so you have full coverage for 10 years giving you complete peace of mind.

We are unable to do this, your existing glass units have already been sealed, breaking the seal and cleaning the sealant off the glass is a very difficult and time consuming task, it would involve us having to come to your property and remove your glass units, leaving you without any glass, then taking the glass units back to our factory and splitting the glass units and cleaning the glass, this whole process would make it more expensive than us providing new sealed glass units. As a result, we are unable to install our blinds into your existing sealed units, we supply new sealed units, because we can insert the blind between the glass during the manufacturing stage of the sealed units in our factory.

Although it is extremely rare that we have any issues with our built in blinds, as with any handmade bespoke product, sometimes it can happen, if it does happen you are fully covered by our 10-year warranty. Our warranty is a repair or replace warranty, therefore it is our discretion as to whether we repair or replace the unit, but in most scenarios we simply replace the unit. We also provide a 10-year warranty PDF certificate to make it easy for you to claim on your warranty.

When it comes to the glazing or glass part of your windows and doors (sealed units), it is perhaps more practical to consider which glass you are being supplied, as there are various glass options available with many being more energy efficient than others. For example, the most energy efficient glass available today is low emissivity glass, or low-E glass, this has a microscopically thin coating of metal oxide on one of the internal glass surfaces, this coating reflects heat back into the home but still lets in the light from outside. Low-E glass has proven to be 40% more energy efficient than conventional glass options. All of our inbuilt blinds are manufactured using low-e glass as standard, we use Planitherm Total Plus, which is the UK’s leading low-E coating brand.

Having inbuilt blinds only serves to enhance the energy efficiency of your home, this is because they provide an additional barrier between the inside of your home and outside. This additional barrier helps to retain heat inside your home, which helps drive your energy bills down and keep your home more energy efficient.

All of our magnetic built in blinds are symmetrical in appearance as standard, we do this because in our experience it is what customers want and prefer. We have spent several years getting feedback from homeowners asking them if they prefer the symmetrical finish, or the finish whereby they just have the perimeter frame on one side of the glass unit, and every time homeowners prefer the symmetrical finish. The symmetrical finish basically means that our magnetic built in blinds have a perimeter frame on both the left and right hand side of the glass unit, giving a symmetrical finish. We only technically need to put the perimeter frame on one side of the glass, whichever side the controls will be (as you get to choose whether to have your controls on the left or right hand side), however as standard we always put the perimeter frame on the opposite side also to achieve a symmetrical finish.

All of our sealed units with built in shades are argon filled as standard. Argon gas is colourless and odourless, it is considerably denser than air and has a much lower thermal conductivity, about a third less than air. Sealed units that are filled with argon gas are more energy efficient than air filled sealed units, and they also allow the blind to operate without issues during the cold weather when glass deflects inwards.

Where can built in mini blinds be installed?

Our built in blinds can be installed into any window/door frame that can accommodate sealed units that are 24mm in thickness or above, but in the vast majority of cases this is never a problem, as the standard thickness of a sealed unit in the UK is 28mm, and our built in blind sealed units are also 28mm thick as standard, although we can go down to 24mm if required, using a 16mm cavity/spacer bar, and two 4mm panes of glass.

Our built in blinds are suitable for all types of window frames, including casement windows, bay windows, bow windows, tilt & turn windows, and french windows, as well as all types of doors including sliding patio doors, french doors, bifolding doors, and single doors. It does not matter what type of materials your windows/doors are, our built in blinds are suitable for UPVC, Aluminium, and Timber, as long as the frame can accommodate a sealed unit that is 24mm thick or above, our built in blinds are suitable for the frame.

10-Year Warranty on our Built in Blinds

Our Inbuilt Blinds come with a 10-year guarantee, which is double the industry standard! Our guarantee covers both the integrity of the sealed unit; against fog and condensation, as well as the blind mechanism itself, giving full protection and peace of mind.
